Coming up this week...Summer Timetable (Tue, Wed, Thu) / Wirksworth Festival (Sat, Sun) / Tunes & Chips Evening Land Cruise (Sat)
The Ecclesbourne Valley is one of Derbyshire’s most lovely and unspoilt valleys, stretching from the northern outskirts of Derby, at Duffield, to Wirksworth, an ancient market town known as the Gem of the Peak. By taking the train to the line’s far northern terminus at Ravenstor (on its own little branch line from Wirksworth) those of you who like fresh air and a pleasant uphill ramble can join the High Peak Trail, from where there are nearly twenty miles of traffic-free paths into the heart of the Peak District. From this same destination at Ravenstor, you are just a few minutes’ walk from the National Stone Centre and the Steeple Grange Light Railway, and close to Middleton Top Visitor Centre and the Black Rocks picnic area.
The delightful town of Wirksworth offers a variety of cosy pubs, bistros, cafes and traditional shops, with a regular market on Tuesdays, a Farmer’s Market on the first Saturday of each month and a fine Heritage Centre open in the summer months.
The town is full of odd nooks and crannies and the ancient and fascinating church of St Mary nestles in its small cathedral-like precinct a short walk from the station. At the opposite end of the line, the pleasant village of Duffield also has a number of convenient pubs, cafe’s and shops and visitors wishing to occupy an hour or two can take a leisurely stroll to Eyes Meadow, at the confluence of the River Ecclesbourne and the River Derwent, to see the small nature reserve there. The line also has stations at Idridgehay and Shottle (Cowers Lane) where there are many fine walks around the valley and to Alport Height, from which five counties can be seen on a clear day. The Ecclesbourne Valley Railway has a reputation for a friendly welcome to all and we very much hope you will enjoy your visit to us and to this lovely corner of Derbyshire.
Please browse our website and learn more, including how to purchase shares in WyvernRail plc, the community venture founded in 1992 to rescue the line from long disuse. We also market the railway for rail vehicle testing services under the brand MyTestTrack.com and offer facilities for filming under the brand RailFilmLocations.biz.
Welcome to the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway.
