Teddy Bears Picnic

Our next Teddy Bears Picnic-themed day will take place on Bank Holiday Monday 31 August, featuring our steam train pulling our restored heritage carriages. We will have various children’s activities, including a child-friendly trail, play and picnic zones at Wirksworth (picnic blankets/benches and toys on the lawn), picnic bags available to buy on the day and children travel free if they bring their favourite bear.

The price for the return train journey is £20 per person, which includes the voucher for tea (or coffee) and a slice of cake. Two children under 15 years go free, per fare-paying adult.

The Duffield Shopper Special offers a wonderfully nostalgic way to travel, with the journey made aboard one of our heritage Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs). Settle into your seat at Wirksworth and enjoy a leisurely ride along the Ecclesbourne Valley, taking in the views through the large windows as the train makes its way through the Derbyshire countryside to Duffield. Unlike simply driving into the village, the DMU makes the journey part of the experience. With their distinctive interiors, sounds and character, these classic trains recreate the atmosphere of everyday British railway travel from decades gone by. After arriving at Wirksworth, you’ll have time to explore the town and of course, the Farmers’ Market. Your ticket entitles you to any train back to Duffield.

Wirksworth Festival is taking place from 11-20 September and over the weekend of the 12th & 13th we will be taking part in the Art & Architecture Trail. The Art & Architecture Trail involves people opening their homes to turn the town into a multifaceted gallery with over 140 artists and makers exhibiting and selling their work in more than 70 venues. The exhibition spaces are in buildings ranging from charming stone cottages to impressive Georgian townhouses, historic and quirky buildings, gardens, courtyards, shop windows and civic buildings and churches. Our dedicated Festival Special Rail & Trail trains will depart from Duffield at 9.27am and 12.03pm, and bring you right into the heart of the festival; your ticket includes return travel and admission to the Festival.
