LMS BTO 5734 Enters Service

We’re delighted to announce that we have a new carriage going into service on 10 April. This will be the first time this carriage has been used by a heritage railway.

The restoration of 5734 has taken over 25 years to complete, undertaken by owner Don Lee (following its purchase in 1987) and latterly assisted by the LMSCA, it has been restored into working condition as a Brake Third Open (BTO), formatted with loose seating.

Originally built in 1935 as a standard LMS Corridor Brake Third, it was initially based at the Midland Railway Centre, where much of the preparatory work was undertaken with support from the Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trust.

In 2022 the coach was transferred to the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway, where Don Lee, supported by LMS Carriage Association volunteers, continued the restoration work.

This carriage will be an ideal complement to the two LMS carriages already running on the railway.
