Wirksworth’s New Station

Raising funds for Wirksworth’s new station building

The Ecclesbourne Valley Railway Association is in the process of constructing a brand new station building at Wirksworth in the Midland Railway style.

When complete it will incorporate all our visitor facilities in one accessible building, as detailed below.

Wirksworth did have a station until the late 1960s, when it was demolished to make way for a dust dock where stone was tipped from lorries into wagons.

Since 2000, the development of the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway has relied on a collection of temporary buildings, containers and railway coaches to house an interpretative display and museum, an interactive model railway exhibit, information displays, toilets, a shop and catering facilities.

All of these structures are now deteriorating, most are not easily accessible, and the facilities are no longer adequate for the increasing numbers of visitors. Our archives and displays are also at risk in the coach where they are currently housed.

Once complete, the building of 4,683 sq. ft. will incorporate:

  • A new 64-cover café
  • Kitchen & servery area
  • Store rooms
  • Administration offices
  • Booking office
  • Accessible toilets
  • The museum & book shop
  • Information centre & model railway
