The Ecclesbourne Way

The Ecclesbourne Way is an 11-mile walking route that follows the course of the River Ecclesbourne. The walk can either start in Duffield or Wirksworth and on the days that our train services are operating you can enjoy the return leg in a heritage carriage.

The highest point of the route is 768 feet and there are panoramic views from ‘Hilltop’ at 650 feet. There is also an optional extension up to Alport Height, at 1,034 feet above sea level, adding an extra mile to the length of the route.

The walk is well sign posted (look out for the burgundy and cream circular signs ‘Ecclesbourne Way’) along footpaths and a few minor roads; parts of the walk are alongside the river, other parts climb up from the valley and away from the river, providing vantage points from which to take in panoramic views of the Ecclesbourne Valley.

For refreshments, there are cafés and pubs in Duffield and Wirksworth, and at Wirksworth Station there is a bar and café (which are open when the railway is operating). There are also pubs along the route at Cowers Lane and Turnditch.

Ensure you have appropriate footwear and clothing, plus adequate sun and rain protection.

Enjoy the walk!
