Starting on Sunday 22 March, our new 2-for-1 Sunday Social will be available exclusively for the last train of every Sunday (departing Wirksworth at 3.10pm).
Priced at £20 per fare-paying adult (their friend travels for free), they will both enjoy a tea or coffee and a slice of cake, and a return journey from Wirksworth to Duffield.
The management team at Ecclesbourne Valley Railway are launching this new service to help combat loneliness and celebrate friendship, as Tom Tait, a director at the railway explains: “Starting on 22 March 2026, the final Sunday departure from Wirksworth Station will become a dedicated ‘Friendship Train.’
“With this new service, any passenger purchasing a standard ticket can bring a friend along for free. Both will enjoy a free tea or coffee and a slice of cake, to enjoy as they take in the stunning Ecclesbourne Valley as they travel to and from Duffield.
“The initiative aims to provide an affordable way for the local community to re-connect, particularly those who may feel isolated during the tail-end of the weekend. By offering a 2-for-1 experience, we hope to encourage people to reach out to a neighbour, an old friend, or a family member they haven’t seen in a while.”
General manager, Simon Scott, agrees with Tom: “Heritage railways are about more than just running trains; they’re about the people and the communities they connect.
“Sundays can often feel like a ‘down’ time, which is why we wanted to create a space where the price isn’t a barrier to a great afternoon out with a friend. There’s something uniquely therapeutic about the rhythm of the rails and a good chat.”
