Since 2002, we have been welcoming visitors to our heritage railway, operating services between Wirksworth and Duffield, with intermediate stations at Idridgehay and Shottle. The line is run by a dedicated team of volunteers who help to preserve the charm of classic rail travel.
We also run limited services to Ravenstor Station, one mile north of Wirksworth at the end of a unique 1-in-27 incline. From here, visitors can enjoy direct access to the High Peak Trail — a gateway for walkers, cyclists and families exploring the area.
The 9-mile route follows the Ecclesbourne Valley, passing through woodlands, farmland and gently undulating hills — a setting that showcases some of Derbyshire’s most beautiful countryside. It’s the perfect backdrop for a fascinating day out, enjoyed by all ages.
We operate regular passenger services most weekends, hauled by steam and classic diesel locomotives. Throughout the year, we also host a wide range of events, including Santa Specials, murder mysteries, afternoon teas and fine dining experiences.

We had a great experience with our Grandaughter on the Santa Event Train, wonderful festive experience with plenty of fun loving elves who interacted beautifully with all on board and a very attentive Santa, it was organised to be a seamless experience with Hot Chocolate and Cookies too, Highly recommend 👍🏼

Have visited the railway several times now. First time doing a "Santa Special". It was a great experience for children and adults alike. Plus it is very dog friendly. The staff and volunteers went that extra mile to ensure everyone had a great time. Would highly recommend the experience from fake snow, warm trains on a rainy day and Mrs Claus who was highly entertaining. Away from the trains, there is a small museum about the railway, an extensive second hand book shop, railway orientated of course and a small café.

Absolutely fabulous day out..made wonderful memories..from being greeted at the car park to the staff on the station., the train drivers ...the elves, Santa Claus on the train truly made this a memorable day...they made it such fun! Really lovely Christmas Afternoon Tea on the train. Long train journey wonderful food with plenty of tea coffee, a glass of prosecco each. A range of drinks to purchase.

My wife booked us onto this excursion complete with fish and chips. It was an amazing experience which lasted about 2 hours. There are plenty of toilets and a buffet carriage serving alcohol and snacks. At the turn around there was lovely fish and chips waiting which we ate as we set off for the journey back
The day went smoothly and efficiently. The staff were brilliant and it was well worth the money. At Wirksworth there is a little museum shop, loads of books and photos, not just for the train enthusiast. This is definitely worth a visit, even if you aren't into trains
