The Ecclesbourne Valley Railway has been making great strides since the early days of resurrection by a group of volunteers, taking positive ideas forward to what we have today. So much has been painstakingly done in the intervening years and it is with thanks to so many people past and present that we have such a beautiful branch line for all to enjoy.
The one major building we sadly lack at Wirksworth is our Station Building. We aim to raise £500,000 for the ground works, the completed building and the inetrnal fitting out. Can you help us?
...or simply pop in!
Please note: As an alteration since the original Share Prospectus was produced, the EIS scheme has been altered to allow tax benefits for all share holdings.
Appeal for a new Station Building at Wirksworth
In the late 1960's, the original Wirksworth Station Building was demolished to make way for a Dust Dock; a 15-foot high mound was provided for stone to be loaded from road lorries into rail wagons, so significantly we lost the basis of a building which woud have served the railway well in it's early days of railway heritage preservation.
During the intervening years Portakabins have been the main stay of our Booking Office, Mess Room and other facilities on Platform 1 at Wirksworth Station and sadly as the years have taken their toll on those buildings, we are now looking to replace a large open space from where the mound used to be with a brand new Station Building.
The building will be a heritage looking buliding based on the Midland Railway design with canopies, but will be built with modern materials, a brick base with timber construction which is modular to allow for expansion in the future.
The building will be 4,683 square feet in total and will provide the following:
- Cafe to seat 64 covers
- Associated kitchen and servery area
- Store rooms
- Admin offices
- Booking Office and Gift Shop
- Ladies, Gents and Disabled toilet facilities
- An open space to include a museum, book shop, information centre and model railway layout
