SUMMARY:Drive an 08 Shunter Experience
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday 9 August\, as part of our Summer Diesel Gala\, we’re offering the chance to drive an 08 shunter\, which has proved to be a very popular experience. \nYou will be in charge of driving this heritage diesel locomotive\, plus our Toad brake van\, up our 1-in-27 incline. \nYour experience will start on Platform 3 at Wirksworth station\, where you (and up to six guests) will be introduced to your instructor. This experience will last for around 20 to 30 minutes. \nOnce you have been made familiar with the controls and your guests have boarded\, you will set off heading north towards our maintenance shed\, as you pass this you will start the climb\, you will pass under Cemetery Lane bridge and go around a left hand bend\, as you climb even more before you reach our steepest gradient of 1-in-27\, once you have passed under Cromford Road bridge you will reach the summit and come to a halt on Platform 1 at Ravenstor. \nYou will have a short pause here whilst your guides let you know some of the history of the line and it is also a good photo opportunity. \nThen for the hard part: you will be in full control of the brakes as you take the train back down the steep and challenging gradients\, and come to a stop in Platform 3 at Wirksworth. This is also where your experience will come to an end. \nBUY TICKETS

DESCRIPTION:Bronze Diesel Driver Experience | £295 per person (includes one free guest)  \nThis immersive driver experiences let you take the controls as you travel between Wirksworth and Duffield. \nDuring our most popular diesel driving experience\, you will take the controls as part of a small group and spend the whole day learning to drive along the valley. \nYou will take the controls of one of our heritage railcars under the guidance of one of our skilled instructors and take it in turns to drive to Duffield and back. \nTake in the local atmosphere with a freshly prepared lunch in the Station Cafe and then enjoy a tour of Wirksworth site and our facilities. \nIn the afternoon you will feel the power of one of our mainline diesel locomotives. Participants may travel on the heritage railcar in the morning and join you for lunch\, however they will not be able to ride on the mainline diesel locomotive in the afternoon. \nFeatures: \n\nOpportunities to drive a diesel railcar then large main line diesel\nLunch included for participant and one guest\nTimings 9:30 until 16:00\nWhere possible guests may be able to ride on the train\n\nRequirements: \nParticipants must be aged 18 or over and must be physically able to climb into the train from ground level at all ages. \nBUY TICKETS

DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT IS NOW SOLD OUT\, BUT NEW DATES ARE BEING ADDED SOON\nFor Sunday 21 June\, Father’s Day\, we’re taking bookings for the chance to drive an 08 shunter\, which is a brand new experience for 2026. \nTreat your father to this unique experience where he can take charge of driving this heritage diesel locomotive\, pulling our Toad brake van\, up our 1-in-27 incline. \nThe experience starts on Platform 3 at Wirksworth station\, where dad and up to six guests will be introduced to their instructor. This experience will last for around 20 to 30 minutes. \nOnce your dad has been made familiar with the controls and guests have boarded\, he will set off heading north towards our maintenance shed\, then the track starts to climb\, passing under Cemetery Lane bridge and go around a left hand bend\, before reaching our steepest gradient of 1-in-27. \nHaving passed under Cromford Road bridge the locomotive will come to a halt on Platform 1 at Ravenstor\, at the top of the incline. \nAfter a short pause here the guides will provide some of the history of the line and it’s also a good photo opportunity. \nThen for the interesting part: your dad will be in full control of the brakes as he takes the train back down the steep and challenging gradients\, and come to a stop in Platform 3 at Wirksworth.
